R.I.P Simon Mckinley

Possibly the greatest driver you've never heard of

You might not know the name Simon McKinley, but chances are you're familiar with his driving.

You might have seen videos of a white Ford Mk II Escort being driven with the sort of commitment only exhibited by those with immense talent or a severe lack of regard for consequences.

If not, you can witness it above.

The mad Irishman behind the wheel is Simon McKinley, who sadly passed away on the weekend following an accident in an Irish hillclimb event.

McKinley crashed while driving a single seater (having progressed from his Escort) and despite the best efforts of the rescue crew, died at the scene.

The rest of the event was cancelled as a mark of respect, and social media has been awash with tributes to the 34-year-old four-time Irish Hillclimb champion.

McKinley is survived by his wife Deirdre, herself a regular competitor, and one-year-old son Rory. Our condolences are with McKinley's family and friends.

The next time we're adding a handful of opposite lock, we'll remember him.
