Mercedes system tracked Boston bombers

The two alleged ‘Boston bombers’, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, were tracked by police using a two-way, satellite system known as ‘mbrace’, fitted to the Mercedes-Benz SUV car-jacked by the brothers on the night of the Boston Marathon attacks.

According to the ‘Boston Globe’, having shot a police officer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the pair car-jacked a Mercedes-Benz ML 350 in the nearby suburb of Cambridge, taking its owner on terrifying, 90-minute ride at gun-point around the city.

The car’s owner, referred to only as ‘Danny’, says the pair openly discussed driving to New York, where it’s thought they intended to carry out further bombings.

Amazingly, Danny escaped at a petrol station, and told police his car was equipped with the Mercedes 'mbrace' system; featuring among other functions, remote car control and navigation applications.

Connected to the car via smartphone, the system led police to the waterfront location where an end-game gunfight played out.

According to Mercedes-Benz, mbrace is not currently available in Australia.
