Buoyed by the sell-out success of its Cayman GT4 and 911 R, Porsche is reportedly planning a major motorsport-inspired expansion program covering the next 12 months.
It will start in March at the Geneva motor show when the 911 GT3 will be reintroduced with a manual transmission previewed by the limited-edition R, however UK publication Autocar has cited a source further stating the 350kW 3.8-litre GT3 will move to an upgraded version of the larger 368kW 4.0-litre GT3 RS engine.
That a 991 Series II version of the naturally aspirated GT cars follows the rest of the now facelifted Carrera lineup is no surprise, but later this year the Turbo and Turbo S are also tipped to spawn a 911 GT2 last introduced in 2010’s 997 Series II guise with 456kW/700Nm.
According to Autocar’s source the 911 GT2 “should be ready by the end of the year” and will see out the current 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged flat six-cylinder engine with 485kW – well up on the current 427kW Turbo S.
Apparently engineers were targeting 522kW, but the engine would have needed water injection to contain engine temps. Given the Turbo S claims 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds, however, an additional 58kW should still position it as the fastest 911 in the lineup.
The big, boosted six is also set to bow out with the 991 range, with the next-generation model expected to be based on a larger version of the Carrera’s 3.0-litre turbo unit.
Around this time next year Porsche-philes can then expect to see the Cayman GT4 RS – according to the same Autocar source – complete with the 4.0-litre 911 GT3 engine.
Although far from confirmed, the reports certainly whet our appetite. We can’t imagine Porsche engineers sitting idle while the market is left hungry for every GT car they make.
