2018 BMW X3 M40i details revealed

BMW’s next generation of small SUV, the updated X3 line-up, features its first performance model, the X3 M40i.

Featuring a 3.0-litre straight six engine, the M40i will put out 265kW and 500Nm, which Munich says will propel the SUV to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds.

That’s the same claim as than the much lighter BMW M140i (1445kg vs 1810kg) which has a similar power output of 250kW/500Nm.

The M40i will have BMW’s eight-speed “Steptronic Sport” transmission, with launch control to help chase down that elusive 4.8 second run to 100.

It also gets “model specific” tuning and equipment, as well as visual M Performance design features.

These features include flap-controlled M Sport exhaust system (with Black Chrome tailpipe “embellishers”), M Sport brakes, M Sport suspension with M Performance tuning, variable sport steering, and 20-inch light-alloy wheels.

BMW X3 M40i rear
BMW says the M40i also gets a rear-bias, though how far that goes is unknown as yet.

“In addition, its xDrive all-wheel-drive system has a far more pronounced rear bias than on the other model versions.

$100K to play: BMW M2 or M140i?

“The Performance Control feature integrated into the DSC system and acting on the rear wheels has been reconfigured to produce the dynamism, agility and traction control for which M models have made their name.”

Inside, the X3 M40i gets sports seats, with M40i logos to differentiate it from ‘lesser’ models.

“M40i logos adorn, for instance, the front door sill strips and instrument panel to provide further visual emphasis of the car’s performance capabilities.”

Meeting Mr MX-5

The new X3 will, of course, hit our shores, though when is not yet known.
