Market Watch: Lamborghini vs HSV

The brilliant thing about the used performance car market is its diversity.

Thanks to the vagaries of depreciation (or in very rare cases, appreciation), cars that cost very different amounts of money when new suddenly find themselves occupying the same price region.

For example, if you've got $180K burning a hole in your pocket, you could splash out on a new Porsche Cayman GTS or BMW M4. Or, you could buy something a bit rarer or more exotic on the second hand market.

If mid-engined European sports cars are your thing, how about this 2004 Lamborghini Gallardo?

It's a very desirable 6-speed manual, with 40,542km on the clock it's had a reasonable amount of use (always a good sign) and comes with a full Lamborghini service history.

Our other offering couldn't be more different, a hulking V8-powered rear-drive sedan from the good folks at HSV.

This W427 actually the more powerful of the two cars (375kW vs 368kW) but can't match the Lambo's outright pace nor its supercar appeal.

However, unlike the Lambo, which has lost over 50 per cent of its original value, the HSV's ask is actually $35,000 more than its new price.

For that you can thank its rarity; initially 427 of these 7.0-litre Commodores were due to be produced, but the Global Financial Crisis soon put the brakes on that and only 137 were built.
