As we prepare to say goodbye to the VF Series II and Gen-F2 range on October 20 and General Motors refuses to produce a factory right-hand drive Camaro, Melbourne-based Crossover Car Conversions (CCC) has revealed it can import the scary-fast ZL1 and swap the steering wheel and pedals to the correct (ahem, right) side for around $150K all told.
The US $60,000 (AU $79,000) Camaro ZL1 uses an LT4-generation 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine, the successor to HSV’s LS9 unit of the same capacity. Outputs of 485kW and 881Nm oust our home-grown hero by 11kW/66Nm and the bow-tie-badged coupe is lighter as well.
According to CCC shipping adds $5000 to the price while our five per cent import tariff nabs another $3000, Luxury Car Tax (LCT) a further $6209 and GST an additional $8200.
Keep the calculator close by, because that’s $101,409 just to import the vehicle; the conversion company requires another $44,000 for the local conversion, $6000 of which is absorbed by re-engineering work for the electric power steering system alone.
With strict regulations surrounding personal imports, CCC also takes care of the purchase and importation of the vehicle. The company reckons the conversion process will take eight to 10 weeks as part of a complete six-month process.
What buyers will have for around $150K is a General Motors product even rarer on our shores than the GTS-R W1. And arguably just as cool.
