It turns out the Koenigsegg Agera RS is quite fast. In fact, it’s now the fastest car in the world.

After a couple of long runs down a closed Nevada desert highway, Koenigsegg factory test driver Niklas Lilja managed to clock the fastest speed recorded for a production car.

The point of the exercise wasn’t to hit a particular speed quickly as Koenigsegg did last month with its 0-400-0km/h sprint, but to find the upper limits of the ‘Egg’s capabilities.

The first run resulted in a very quick top speed of 437.7km/h, which took the Agera RS 4.5km to reach.

The 1000kW/1371Nm Koenigsegg still had more potential though, something Lilja seemed to know quite well, as he went back for another run.

While we know the Agera is incredibly impressive, its kerb weight of just 1395kg means it has a ratio of 717kW per tonne.

Even then, it was surprising to see the V-Box data displayed on the video above show the Agera RS notch up a top speed of 457.5km/h over 6000 metres.

The likes of Bugatti and Hennessey have a hard task ahead of them if they want to top that.

Still, Hennessey predicts the top speed of its new Venom F5 to be 484km/h, which would be astonishing, and who knows what else the Bugatti Chrion is capable of.

Koenigsegg is just enjoying the moment.
