Ford Performance has announced it will recreate the Mustang Cobra Jet for 2018, based on the new Mustang, and with a supercharged 5.2-litre Coyote V8.

The legendary badge will adorn a limited run of 68 units, a reference to the original 1968 Cobra Jet, which will be non-VIN production cars.

Ford’s information on the car thus far is scarce, but as a rival to the likes of the Dodge Demon, it looks like it’ll be formidable.

Ford Performance says the 2018 Cobra Jet will run mid-8s at the strip, crossing the finish topping an astonishing 240km/h.

Ford also revealed, as well as the engine, that the car will feature a “unique four-link rear suspension, along with a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering, an NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, and a drag race-specific coil-over suspension with specially designed Weld Racing wheels.”

Ford Performance Parts global director Eric Cin says the history of the Cobra Jet has made it a legend, and that has inspired Ford to recreate it for the modern muscle car fan.\

“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades,” says Cin.

“That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”

Ford Performance says it will reveal the availability and specifications for the 2018 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet in the US-summer or roughly mid-year.
