2018 RUF SCR is more than just a modified 911 GT3

Revealed at Geneva somewhat quietly, the RUF SCR carries on a name from 40 years ago

This isn’t a Porsche, it’s an RUF.

As one of the most well-known manufacturers of vehicles based on pre-existing models, RUF has been re-imagining Porsche’s cars for decades. And its 2018 SCR is no different.

Revealed at the Geneva Motor Show, the 2018 RUF SCR is named for a model revealed in 1978, which was a 162kW 911-based, whale-tailed legend.

RUF revealed a prototype in 2016 bearing the name, but decided another couple of year to develop it would result in the right outcome.

“RUF wanted to create a unique, state-of-the-art, gentleman-driver sports car for those who prefer the soundtrack of a normally-aspirated engine.”

Now, the badge appears on a 375kW/470Nm version with a 991.2 911 look, minus the wing.

It’s powered by a tuned version of the 4.0-litre flat-six found in a GT3, but underneath the bodywork it’s not much like a 911.

It has a completely bespoke carbon fibre monocoque chassis, and utilises a carbon fibre body shell with an integrated roll cage to keep weight to an impressive 1250kg.

That’s a solid couple-of-hundred kilograms lighter than most 911s on the menu today.

And since it’s got more power than a GT3 (while keeping its engine atmo), it boasts a far better power-to-weight ratio.

The GT3’s 260kW-per-tonne is well and truly left behind by the 300kW for each tonne on the SCR.

RUF says the 2018 SCR will hit a top speed of 320km/h. Plus you get to use a manual ‘box to row through all six gears on your way there.
